Now for something a bit different. I’ve had my Astrotrac for over a year now but have barely used it until recently due to work commitments or extended periods of poor skies. Well we’ve finally had quite a few clear nights recently so it was time to take it out for a spin.

Here’s a widefield shot taken from the ruins of Annaghkeen Castle in Galway, Ireland using the Astrotrac, Canon 7d and a Samyang 8mm Fisheye (yep, that’s one WIIIIDE lens). Hope you like it.

History

Built in the 12th century by the De Burgo family.

Apparently built at the same time as the nearby Cargrin castle to help protect their manor against incursions by the O’Flaherty clan from the other side of the Corrib.

Thought to be the oldest example in Ireland of a castle built entirely from undressed stone.
